Description
The spark for this painting came from the Okefenokee—the Georgia wetland famously known as the “Land of the Trembling Earth.” It’s a place untamed and wild, where the trees wear their moss like living jewelry and creatures of shadow and light keep watch. Translating its quiet wilderness into watercolor felt like a gentle challenge: to balance intricate detail with fluid softness, and solidity with airiness.
I’ve been having fun bringing the charm of the South into a new watercolor called Soul Of The South Spanish Moss Tree. At 18 by 24 inches, it’s my tribute to a majestic oak all decked out with its wispy Spanish moss, standing proud by still waters that catch every detail like a perfect mirror. There’s even a wise little owl keeping watch, because every great tree needs a loyal guardian, right?
The sky’s a gentle blend of blues, pinks, and purples—a soft backdrop that feels like the calm pause before a secret unfolds. Painting this piece was like stepping into a quiet world that’s full of stories waiting to be told, and I hope it invites you in for a moment of peace and a sprinkle of mystery.
This isn’t just a landscape; it’s a quiet invitation to linger, to notice the spaces between movement and stillness, between earth and air. The owl’s calm presence encourages a moment of reflection—an homage to endurance, watchfulness, and the subtle magic that thrives in the South’s hidden corners.
