Savannah Bird Girl Bluebells Forest Watercolor Paintings
This is an original in a series of watercolor paintings. In this version I saw her in a bed of bluebells. In summer sun against the cool blue the painting is striking in complimentary colors. Which is also a note to the duality of life. Hot-cold, short-long, young-old,life-death, righ-wrong and so on. Just as opposing colors validate eachother, so I think we must look at opposing forces making eachother a reality. Just as in painting one must dominate the other. It’s said to either have 2/3 warm or 2/3 cool as an ideal palette.
The Bird Girl became a fascination of mine ever since first visiting Savannah and Bonaventure cemetery, where this statue original stood. After it became famous it had to be moved. It was sculpted by Sylvia Shaw Judson in 1936. The book “Midnight In The Garden of Good and Evil” made this figure of the bird girl famous. It was the cover of the book “Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil a non-fiction work by John Berendt.”
To me it came to symbolize good and evil, the girl holding bowls for seeds to feed the birds, she appears to hold scales, weighing or keeping the balance between the two opposing sides of life. The passions of humans in all their doings, but especially in love and relationships. As the world turns, there is always the presence of temptation to take the wrong path. To follow emotions and cast good judgement or common sense aside. The bird girl, so innocent, so simple, minimalist in appearance as if saying: “Look it’s not that hard to figure out, things are not as complicated as they seem. Good & Evil, you know when you see it. Yes Love is forever if you work at it and want it to be!”
