Description

This is a stunning large oil painting and it’s name is Venice Italy Mystery City. So why do I paint or better did I ever start to paint Venice?
It isn’t because I went there and experienced the bubbly colorful Venice we see in tourist brochures.

When I was about 14 years old I watched “Wenn Die Gondeln Trauer Tragen”, the English title is “Don’t Look Now”.
I was at my grandparents house and my favorite thing to do was watching American Movies. Well this movie plays in Venice Italy, has a deep mystery story and I fell in love with it. I was a very different sort of child and young person then my peers.

Never much interest in pop culture but I did seek out the mysterious, the unexplained, maybe a bit of scary and tragic themes including love stories. Those were the stories I was drawn to. Even as a child I had an understanding of the supernatural. So “Don’t Look Now” was always a film that stuck with me, If you have not seen it and want to watch here is a link on AMAZON CLICK LINK
The Venice imprint I received by this film was a Venice Mystery City. Back Canals, dark and wet, dingy and dangerous a maze of narrow canals small bridges, tall buildings, dark water splashing, nipping on a crumbling façade. Hollow footsteps echoing in deserted views.

Venice Italy Mystery City. Of all the most cultured places in the world I like to keep that vision of Venice in my mind. Which is why I probably most likely never want to visit Venice at all. This may be hard to understand, but to me reality is secondary to imagination especially in my art. I am convinced if I visited Venice today I would leave bitterly disappointed because I feel that I have already visited Venice in a different time and place in a different life.
Needless to say, I understand the tourist industry and travel to European cities is dominated by colorful advertising. People love the vibrant liveliness of places and that is why I also paint some watercolors of Venice in a more happy palette. The works of Venice that I truly love myself are my darker palette pieces so I bring you this large 24 inch wide and 48 inch tall palette knife oil painting “Venice Italy Mystery City on The Water”
