This is a stunning large watercolor and ink and it’s name is Venice Italy Piazza San Marco. In 2019 the famous plaza was hit by unprecedented flooding or ‘acqua alta’ as it is called.
Venice is a favorite tourist destination and I read that the daily amount of tourists is larger than Venice inhabitants. As a matter of fact the amount of Tourists seem to become a real challenge to Venice and the government. Because of that it hardened the rules to follow for visitors. Let’s see, one of them I remember reading is that you get fined for leaning against storefronts. A couple was arrested and fined for making coffee on a bridge 😀 that was a really odd one. Who makes coffee on a bridge?
Oh well lets not talk too much about rules, Venice Italy is one of the number one tourist destinations and probably worth the trouble. Piazza San Marco is iconic with it’s pigeons which are elevated to a status of absolute necessity. Without them it just would not be the same.
I’ve only visited Venice with my astral body so to speak. I had it one my bucket list but I think now, it will probably never happen. But I can paint it as much as I like, read and dream about it. Let me tell you how I paint these watercolors and ink. I call it free style because for the most part I never draw things out with pencil, I dive right in with my black ink and dipping pens. It’s fearless style 🙂
The ink I use is sumi ink or india ink that dries waterproof. After my fluid intuitive ink work has dried I begin with the watercolor application. Places like Venice and historical architecture like Piazza San Marco are excellent for my style of intuitive drawing with ink. If you are looking for detailed architectural realistic art, where every item looks exactly like the real thing, you are surely in the wrong place. Venice Italy Piazza San Marco is one of my favorites of the many Venice attractions I have visited with my brushes over 20 years. I really think the romanticized version that resides in my brain and heart would be destroyed, should I ever visit Venice in person.
