Description

Spring in Savannah Georgia famous “Waving Girl” painted in fine oil on canvas. I found the statue of Florence Martus when I visited Savannah a few years back. It wasn’t the first time I came to the city but I never strolled that far on River Street.

I decided to paint two versions of “Waving Girl” one depicting the statue and another in which I wanted to bring her alive. This version is Spring In Savannah Georgia and depicts the actual statue. I added two palmetto palms because I used total artistic discretion in how I painted this.  I wanted to introduce the color red because I believe she waved at the ships for 44 years because she loved a young sailor who left and she never saw him again. Red to me symbolizes Love.

From a women’s point of view, I think she waved because of a broken heart. Florence was born on Cockspur Island and later moved in with her brother and lived on Elba island, a small island on the Savannah River close to the Atlantic Ocean where the ships come in through what is called the Tybee Roads. She waved  for 44 years and is said to not have missed a ship. Pretty remarkable.

My palette was greens, yellow, happy sky blue, red of course, and touches of cad orange, allowing the colors to mingle to create a fresh happy Spring in Savannah Georgia feeling. The painting is varnished with damar resin. It is ready to ship.
